The 10th annual Sears BracketBusters match up was announced Monday and the University of Akron men’s basketball team will take on Oral Roberts Saturday, Feb. 18 at Tulsa. Okla.

Akron who has a record of 15-7, 7-1 in the Mid American Conference, are 1-2 the last three years in the BracketBusters matchup. Their only win was against Creighton last year at home 76-67.

The University of Akron men’s basketball team defeated Ohio University Saturday evening, continuing their winning streak.

In a 57-56 game with only 3:58 remaining, Zips’ starting point guard Alex Abreu was scoreless.

That would all change after a kick-out from center Zeke Marshall landed in the hands of the sophomore guard, who proceeded to knock down the biggest three-point bucket of the night, giving the Zips a 59-57 lead over the Ohio Bobcats.

UA women’s basketball defeats rival Kent State 62-68 Saturday

The University of Akron women’s basketball team (8-10, 2-2 MAC) has started conference play 2-2 after defeating rival Kent State (2-12, 1-3 MAC) 62-68 Saturday at James A. Rhodes Arena.

“Anytime you can win, we’re happy with that,” sixth-year Akron Head Coach Jodie Kest told media after the game.

UA downs Detroit 81-63 on Saturday

The University of Akron Women’s basketball team traveled over 2,400 miles to compile two wins in the Seattle Thanksgiving Weekend Tournament.

Along with the Zips, San Francisco, Loyola-Chicago and Seattle competed in the two-day event. Akron defeated Loyola-Chicago handily Friday night in the first game and pushed away from Seattle University in the championship game Saturday night.

Women’s basketball splits preseason WNIT at home

The University of Akron Zips women’s basketball team competed in the WNIT consolation bracket over the weekend at James A. Rhodes arena, beating the Howard Bison (0-3) 63-64 in their first home game Friday night but falling to Drexel in the championship game 60-67.

Akron, who entered the early season playoff after losing to No. 2 ranked Notre Dame, cruised to a big advantage early in the game against the Bison. Leading at one point 12-1, Akron fought hard and showed no hangover from the previous lost.

The Bison did not let the early deficit defeat them.
