Battle for the Wagon Wheel: Kent defeats Akron 35-3 at last home game

For Head Coach Darrell Hazell and the Kent State football program, Saturday ended in a similar fashion to its start, with possession of the Wagon Wheel.

The Golden Flashes dominated a demoralized Akron team en route to 35-3 win, earning their second straight victory over the Zips and first win in Akron since 2003.

“Today we had a tremendous performance in all three phases,” Hazell said. “We just keep scraping.”

Wagon Wheel up for grabs

The 2011 seasons for the Akron and Kent State football programs have strayed far from preseason expectations, as they have combined for four wins and 14 losses this year.

The two teams will meet Saturday in their annual rivalry game, looking to shed some kind of light on otherwise forgettable seasons.

A heavy rain fell on the field of Yager Stadium last Thursday night.

“Certainly they were a lot better team than us today,” said the second-year head coach. “[Ohio] dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage.”
