Zips sophomore forward Darren Mattocks drafted No.2 into MLS

Sophomore forward Darren Mattocks was the No. 2 overall selection in the 2012 Major League Soccer Super Draft this past Thursday.

Mattocks will be going to the Vancouver Whitecaps, joining former Zips teammate Michael Nanchoff.

“On behalf of the entire Akron soccer family, we want to congratulate Darren for his selection to the Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer,” said UA Head Coach Caleb Porter.

Tourney time in Akron

For the first time since 2006, The University of Akron men’s soccer team was unable to come home with the Mid-American Conference championship, losing 4-3 in penalty kicks in the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament to Western Michigan last Friday.

The Zips (13-3-4), however, will take on Northwestern (10-4-4) this Thursday at First Energy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Kick off is slated for 7:30 p.m.

At the end of regulation on Friday, the No. 1 seed University of Akron men’s soccer team was tied 1-1 with the No. 4 seed Western Michigan before losing 4-3 in penalty kicks in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament at First Energy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field.

The Zips (13-3-4) out-shot WMU 10-3 in the first half and 22-10 overall, but lost the lead with less then 10 minutes to go in regulation after Western Michigan was able to get on the board.

On Sunday, The No. 6 University of Akron men’s soccer team defeated Florida Atlantic University 2-0 in Boca Raton, Fla., for the Zips’ last regular season game.

The Zips (13-3-3, 6-0 Mid-American Conference) were led by senior Luke Holmes and sophomore Darren Mattocks, who each contributed goals in the game.

Women’s soccer optimistic for next season

Creating one of the toughest schedules in the history of the program, UA’s Head Coach Chris Pfau was set on helping his program take the next step, and the women’s soccer team came into the season ready to compete.

Opening up in Ann Arbor to play the University of Michigan, it appeared that the program did take that next step. Beating Michigan 0-1 thanks to sophomore forward Kyarah Foushee’s goal, Akron’s win has been debated as the most prestigious of victories the team has ever had. Everything appeared to be shaping up nicely for Akron. However, setbacks did ensue quickly after the emotional win.

That was the last time The University of Akron men’s soccer team lost at First Energy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field. On Wednesday night, the No. 6 Zips lost to Michigan State 1-0 in the 87th minute.

The defeat is the first at home since their 1-0 loss to South Florida in the NCAA Tournament, snapping their NCAA home-unbeaten streak to 48 games, which was fourth all-time.

Zips win their seventh straight MAC regular season title: Men’s soccer defeats Bowling Green 3-0

The No. 7 University of Akron men’s soccer team defeated Bowling Green 3-0 last night for the Zips’ seventh consecutive regular season Mid-American Conference title.

With this MAC regular season championship win, Head Coach Caleb Porter has won six in a row while at Akron and will be on the hunt now for his fifth consecutive MAC Tournament Championship, which will open up play on Nov. 11.

Men’s soccer rolls past Buffalo 5-2

The No. 4 University of Akron Zips men’s soccer team defeated Buffalo 5-2 this past Friday night, with sophomore forward Darren Mattocks recording his second hat trick of the season at UB Stadium.

After this, his third career hat trick, Mattocks has now has recorded 15 goals in 14 games this season. Friday’s game was also the fourth time Mattocks has scored two or more goals in a game this season.

Zips lose two over weekend

The University of Akron was held scoreless when the women’s soccer team took to the pitch at Kent State and Buffalo this weekend.

Akron started the weekend by traveling to nearby Kent State. The game was played on a muddy, slippery field that had some fans, along with officials, wondering if the game should have been moved to Dix Stadium (Kent State’s football stadium). Nevertheless, both school officials decided to play the game at the scheduled spot.

Tuesday night The No. 4 University of Akron men’s soccer team was defeated 1-0 by Michigan in the first overtime at UM Soccer Stadium.

A scramble in front of the net led to a chip shot goal by Latife Alashe in the 97th minute. The goal was Alashe’s second goal of the season and his second career game-winner.

After a tough 3-2 loss in overtime to No. 19 UC Santa Barbra this past Wednesday, the No. 3 University of Akron men’s soccer team got back to form, defeating Northern Illinois 2-0 on Saturday night at First Energy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field.

The Zips (8-1-2, 2-0-0 Mid-American Conference) wasted no time getting on the board as sophomore forward Darren Mattocks scored the first of two goals of the night in the 16th minute of play.

Zips open up MAC play at home this weekend

The only other loss Northern Illinois has suffered this season is a 2-1 overtime loss to Xavier on Sept. 16 in the Northwestern Lakeside Classic.

Offensively, the Huskies are led by sophomore midfielder Gael Rivera and freshman forward Paul Hogan with three goals each, while sophomore midfielder Karim Darbaki is tied for second on the team with two goals.

Luke Holmes named Top Drawer Soccer Player of the Week

On Monday senior forward Luke Holmes was named Top Drawer Soccer’s National Player of the Week after having an eye-opening week in his debut with Akron.

Holmes, who spent the first three years of his career at nearby NAIA school Notre Dame College recorded two goals and two assists in wins over Ohio State and Western Michigan this past week.

Lady Zips set up for road play

The Akron women’s soccer team will hit the road again this weekend for what may be their toughest road trip of the season.

Akron (4-4-1, 2-1-1 MAC) will face Mid-American Conference opponents Ball State (8-4-1, 3-1-0 MAC) and Toledo (6-5-2, 4-0-0 MAC) on Friday and Sunday, respectively. The two are co-favorites to win the MAC West title this year.

Men’s soccer tops Western Michigan 3-0

The No. 4 University of Akron men’s soccer team opened up Mid-American Conference play this Saturday when they traveled to Western Michigan, defeating the Broncos 3-0.

The Zips (7-0-2) put Western Michigan away early in the game, scoring three goals in the first 30 minutes of the game and recording their sixth shut out of the season.

With the win, UA extends their conference unbeaten streak to 32 games (30-0-2), the sixth-longest run in NCAA history.
