Zips offensive lineman taken with the 88th overall pick in the NFL Draft

University of Akron offensive guard Andy Alleman was selected with the 88th overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft Saturday night by the New Orleans Saints. Alleman was the fourth-highest UA player to be drafted in the NFL behind Charlie Frye, Jason Taylor and Dwight Smith.

Clouds hung over Canal Park Friday night, sprinkling rain for the first inning and threatening to ruin an already dismal beginning to the 2007 season for Cliff Lee. Lee - an integral part of the Cleveland Indians starting rotation - was making his third and final rehab start against the Reading Phillies after suffering a strained abdominal muscle in mid-March.

Mitchell leads Zips to elite national status

Stepping inside coach Dennis Mitchell's office, no visitor would believe his University of Akron track and field team was on life support just 11 years ago. On the walls are plaques honoring NCAA All-Americans, MAC individual champions and team titles. But when the coach took over in 1995, the team was sitting at the bottom of the Mid-American Conference, looking up, wondering if success was even attainable.

Akron has landmark performance at Firestone

The University of Akron men's golf team finished in second place this weekend at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate Tournament. It was Akron's best result since it began hosting the tournament at Firestone Country Club more than 20 years ago. The Zips were in first place for most of the second day, but were unable to fend off a late charge by Eastern Kentucky.
