Ohio still uses the death penalty but there is some hope to change that, according to an American Bar Association report released Sept. 24. The report said Ohio should temporarily halt executions and allow for a review of its system. It was issued following a 30-month review of the current system which it said had "inadequate procedures to protect the innocent, inadequate qualification standards for defense counsel, racial disparities in Ohio's capital sentencing and death sentences imposed and carried out on people with severe mental disability.
Last week, the idea of combining the University of Akron with Cleveland State University surfaced. Following this, the Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, Eric Fingerhut, talked with the Buchtelite about the possibilities of merging Ohio's higher education institutions.
On Thursday, the University of Akron's Associated Student Government received a visit from university president Luis Proenza. Proenza addressed the group about the year to come and the future of UA and Ohio's higher education system. He started by thanking them for their efforts to help UA.
WebCT is a dated application that was developed in the late '90s. It was introduced to the University of Akron's Wayne College in 1999, and brought to the university's main campus a year later. "The version of WebCT we were using was at the end of its life cycle," said John Savery, director of Learning Technology and Scholar-Learner Services.
The University of Akron's office of general counsel sent out a "Special Edition" Zipmail Monday to inform students and the university community of annual reports released by UA. According to the Zipmail, the reports range from safety to equality in athletics.
