2010-2011
Editor-in-Chief Meredith H. Clark
My name is Meredith H. Clark and I’m editor-in-chief of The Buchtelite. I will soon have degrees in Psychology & Anthropology with minors in Women’s Studies & History from UA. I am graduating in May and am moving across the country to pursue a PhD in Gender Studies from Arizona State University. I hope to work in academia after graduating with my doctorate. For now, I live with my boyfriend and we have two adorable cats. I spend too much money at Anthropologie and am highly caffeinated most of the time. I try not to miss The Rachel Maddow Show or True Blood and could read Gone with the Wind and anything by Isabel Allende or Alice Walker over and over again.
Copy Chief Pamela Kellman
I am a junior English major/Spanish minor at UA and plan to apply to grad schools because I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up! I will do just about anything for food. I love obnoxious colors of nail polish, Polar Pop, and Italian mob movies. One of my favorite authors is David Sedaris, and I love TOMS shoes and MLB. Outside of The Buchtelite, I work sparse hours at Bath and Body Works, which I find to be ironic. I live with my roommate, whom I met in the Honors dorms, in West Akron.
Copy Editor Lindsay Powley
Lindsay Powley is a senior at The University of Akron’s College of Arts and Sciences, where she studies French language and culture. As of now, her future career goals include having a career, preferably in a large city. Her interests include anything and everything to do with language, traveling, politics and permaculture. She enjoys spending the weekends with her adopted poodle mix, Gracie, who she swears is the most intelligent, funniest and cutest child under the age of four that she’s ever met.
News Editor Nathan Kemp
I am a junior seeking a B.A. in English with a minor in Creative Writing. This is my first year at The Buchtelite. In my spare time, I like to ski (when weather cooperates), read and smoke hookah. I’ve lived in Ohio all my life, and I’m looking forward to possibly leaving the state when I pursue a graduate degree in English. I live with my girlfriend in the Cuyahoga Valley.
Opinion Editor Molly Gase
Hailing from the town of Wauseon (about 45 minutes west of Toledo) I have now been at The University of Akron for three years. I originally came to UA as a double major in Dance and Public Relations. Due to injury after injury, I arrived at the programs of study I am currently pursuing, which are a major in English and a minor in Dance. An avid reader, I actually love Shakespeare, though I have heard that is not the norm. Even though I have too many injuries to really dance anymore, I still love being involved in the dance world. Besides being the Opinion Section Editor for the Buchtelite, I am also a member of the honorary society Sigma Alpha Lambda and volunteer for a number of random activities around campus.
Arts & Life Editor David Sickels
I am a junior at The University of Akron and am majoring in Mass Communications – News. I am the Arts and Life editor of the Buchtelite and I give private saxophone lessons in Wadsworth. In addition to journalism, I like funk music, movies starring George Clooney and Mario Kart 64.
Sports Editor Caleb Clark
Caleb was born on a hot August night in Akron, Ohio. Ever since, Caleb has been barging onto the sports scene with his reporting via print, radio and television. Currently, Caleb serves as the sports editor for The Buchtelite, the sports director at WZIP and is also interning in The University of Akron’s Athletic Department. All of his hard work will hopefully lead him to his ultimate goal of becoming an athletic director of a division I university.
Page Designer Emily Poor
Emily Poor is a page designer at the Buchtelite, and a Graphic Design major with minors in Photography and Digital Imaging. She grew up in Toledo, Ohio with an older brother, a few dogs and an array of cats. She spent quite some time in her youth going to dance recitals, taking photographs of her friends, baking sugar cookies and awkwardly playing sports. She enjoys listening to The Magnetic Fields and Beach House, playing the singing saw, walking barefoot, Woody Allen, drinking tea and eating oranges.
Page & Web Designer Mahala J. Bloom
Mahala J. Bloom, more commonly addressed as “Haley,” is a graphic design major and page and web designer for The Buchtelite. Aside from her love of illustration, photography, graphic design, website design, and all things art, she also adores language and Latin American culture, and is an advocate of immigration reform. She has five years training in Spanish, and is currently taking Brazilian Portuguese classes. She traveled out of the country last summer to the beautiful city of Natal, RN, Brazil. It is rumored that she also has a mild obsession with reptiles, big cities, artsy mom-and-pop coffee shops, Alphonse Mucha, and comic book artwork. Her dream is to work for a design magazine, or for an immigration reform organization. Mahala also operates her own student-professional blog on design and illustration, www.mahaladesign.wordpress.com
