Cue "The Final Countdown" by Europe. The long journey of breaking down the sports world comes to an end today. Rather than leaving you with a sappy, I'll miss writing in this space every Thursday farewell column, I find it better to recap the breakdowns that have been printed here over the past nine months and to take a look into the future of the sports world, for which I have rambled about extensively.
The University of Akron Zips kicked off their home stand against the Kent State Flashes on Friday. The Zips battled the flashes for last time this weekend, leaving the winner with bragging rights till fall. The first game left the flashes at the bottom of a 15-7 final score at the end of the first game.
On Friday the Zips battled against Bowling Green in the last home series of the season. While it was chilly for fans, starting pitcher Tom Farmer brought the heat to Falcons hitters. Unfortunately, that heat was just outside of the strike zone. Farmer replaced Zack Yike in the normal pitching rotation for this game.
The Akron Aeros got their first cameo appearance from the Cleveland Indians Wednesday. That cameo was made by injured closer Joe Borowski. Borowski, who was placed on the disabled list April 15 with a tricep injury, rehabbed during the game against the Altoona Curve.
After the excitement of having two Cleveland Indians pitchers make guest appearances in Akron, starting pitcher Ryan Edell took the mound against the Erie Sea Wolves. Edell pitched for a solid 6 and 1/3 innings but gave up three runs to the wolves allowing them to take a lead they would not give back.
Friday night downtown Akron saw the minor league version of the Yankee vs. Indians. The Aeros took on Yankees affiliate the Trenton Thunder to a crowd of 5196 at Canal Park. Starting pitcher Ryan Edell had a rough start giving up one run in the first inning of the game.
